Longing is a Pride mural reflecting on marriage equality and the barriers faced by queer couples and families in Singapore. At its centre, a pair of lovebirds huddle together as arrows strike them. Each arrow is attached to a red rope with medallions, symbolising the many obstacles LGBTQIA+ people continue to face.

These include the lack of positive representation, the absence of recognition for queer family units, and broader inequalities that often remain invisible to those outside the community. The mural reflects the reality of couples and families striving to live ordinary, complete lives while navigating systems that deny them equal recognition and security.

Despite this, the work also speaks to resilience and solidarity, highlighting how queer communities continue to support and protect one another.

The mural is augmented through an AR experience developed with Meshminds, where viewers can interact with each medallion to learn about lived experiences in Singapore. Through this, Longing extends beyond visual representation to foster understanding, empathy, and recognition.

Since 2022, I have created annual Pride murals in response to the regulation of public space in Singapore, where LGBTQIA+ themes are often considered “sensitive” and excluded from public visual culture. For marginalised communities, visibility is especially important, particularly for queer youth and those who may not yet feel safe to come out. The lack of representation can reinforce isolation, while public visibility can affirm presence and belonging. These murals were created as a response to that absence, offering a recurring gesture of representation and solidarity, and affirming that queer lives, relationships, and experiences are part of Singapore’s shared visual landscape.
