What does it cost to be granted the status you were once punished for?

In 2012 I was prosecuted for marking public surfaces in Singapore. In the years that followed, the same gesture was commissioned by brands, then by museums, then by the state itself. The mark never changed- only the authority that named it, and what that naming was worth.

This body treats that passage as evidence rather than biography. Its subject is not censorship or co-optation, but something less discussed: that legitimation is not only imposed from above, it is wanted from below- and that punishment is what manufactures the wanting. A power that penalises and then offers to name you is considerably more effective than one that only penalises.

What is on trial here is a mechanism. The artist is the specimen, not the plaintiff.
