In Rat Race, struggle becomes a confrontation with the systems that sustain society. Rats run endlessly on wheels to generate power for their community, eventually powering the surveillance cameras that monitor their own labour. The work considers the ways in which systems are maintained not only through external control, but through the participation and self-policing of those within them. The escape of one rat raises a question that remains unresolved: what happens to a society when an individual refuses to continue performing the role assigned to them?
