In Singaporean culture, the practice of planting sticks of chilli and onion in the ground (rumoured to be more effective if planted by a virgin) to ward off rain clouds for outdoor events is a traditional superstitious belief possibly rooted in old fishing village traditions. Today this custom is still being practiced mostly by production, event companies and people working outdoors highlighting its cultural significance regardless of belief in its efficacy.
